Jay Frasier, MA

Jay Frasier is currently a full-time instructor of speech communication at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. Jay teaches classes in public speaking, listening, critical thinking, small group communication, teamwork, and interpersonal communication. Lane Community College is generally considered to be one of the top ten community colleges in the country. Jay holds a Master's degree in Communication from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and completed his doctoral coursework in Speech Communication at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

It seems quite ironic that Jay teaches public speaking because he was once terrified of the prospect of giving a speech. His fear led him to begin studying speaking and speaking anxiety. He discovered that much of the common advice given for managing speaking anxiety did not work for him. He discovered that there were well-researched methods of lowering anxiety which did work. One of the primary reasons he enjoys teaching speech is because it allows him to help others learn to manage their own anxieties. He finds that his students often feel more confident in their ability to overcome their fears when they learn that he was once as afraid of giving a speech as they are.

In addition to studying public speaking, Jay also concentrated upon organizational communication in his graduate studies. His thesis details a practical approach to managing organizational conflict through changing the language of a conflict episode. He hopes to soon complete certification as a trainer of the Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense, a powerful system for effective communication developed by linguist Suzette Haden Elgin.

In addition to his work as a college instructor, Jay has recently begun conducting in-house corporate workshops helping others learn to manage their fears of giving presentations. He is qualified to offer training in many additional areas of communication skill development, such as giving dynamic presentations, effective listening skills, teamwork, conflict management, and verbal self-defense. Jay is a dynamic and entertaining speaker and trainer. He uses humor, magic, and even ventriloquism to keep his students involved and excited about learning.
